Every year around the world, thousands of animals are cruelly abandoned, abused, and killed. Humane World for Animals takes on puppy mills, factory farms, trophy hunts, animal testing, and other industries that harm animals. Formerly known as the Humane Society of the United States, Humane World for Animals has been working across the globe since 1954 to help pass landmark laws and rescue hundreds of thousands of animals. The charity fights all forms of animal cruelty to achieve its vision of a humane society for all.
Porte®, a Populus Financial Group, Inc. (“Populus”) brand, supports charities like Humane World for Animals that are doing great work in our communities and partners with them through our charitable giving program.

Fighting Animal Cruelty One Rescue at a Time
Real change for animals doesn’t happen by accident – it’s a result of coordinated action in courtrooms, legislatures, shelters, and neighborhoods led by passionate people. Humane World for Animals partners with communities, governments, and corporations to change policies that allow animal cruelty to persist. Making bold progress for all animals depends on long-term solutions rather than quick fixes.
Values that Guide Progress
Behind every Humane World for Animals rescue or reform effort is a determined team guided by five core values: Impact, Resilience, Respect, Inclusion, and One Team. The team advocates for stronger laws and responsible pet ownership while they equip shelters with the tools to operate more effectively. Working together with partners, allies, and supporters of all kinds, they run awareness campaigns about the realities of animal abuse, inviting everyone to speak out and push for change.

Protecting Animals, Big and Small
Through various partnerships and resources, Humane World for Animals is expanding its reach to protect animals everywhere. Some of the charity’s programs, events, and resources include:
- Laws + Public Policies: The charity advocates for laws and policies to help reform animal ordinances and policies that target certain breeds of dogs.
- Animal Care Expo: An annual conference and trade show for animal sheltering and rescue professionals and volunteers, with sessions that teach practical skills and strategies that local organizations can use.
- Puppy-Friendly Pet Stores: A program where stores pledge to promote adoption of shelter and rescue pets in their communities rather than selling commercially raised puppies.
- Managing Community Cats: A Guide for Municipal Leaders & Return-to-Field Handbook: Two resources created to help shelters and the communities they serve reduce the feral cat population humanely.

Small Steps to a Brighter Future
Humane World for Animals provides hands-on care to thousands of rescued animals every year, operating animal sanctuaries and running animal care campaigns.
Black Beauty Ranch
At Black Beauty Ranch in Murchison, Texas, nearly 650 domestic and exotic animals now live on over 1,400 acres of protected land. Many were rescued from research laboratories, cruelty cases, roadside zoos, or the exotic pet trade. The ranch, founded in 1979, is one of America’s largest and most diverse animal sanctuaries. For animals that once faced fear, neglect, or confinement, Black Beauty Ranch offers a powerful alternative: space, safety, and a second chance.

Corporate volunteers from the IT team at Populus visited the ranch and learned how contributions help change the lives of these animals.
Pets for Life Campaign
In many underserved neighborhoods, families love their pets but struggle to access affordable veterinary care, supplies, or reliable transportation. The Pets for Life campaign provides free veterinary services, supplies, and support to pet owners so their pets can stay healthy and at home. “People just need a little bit of help, a little bit of support, and the last thing we want is for people to decide between putting food on their own table and be able to provide nutritional food for their pets who are their family,” says Kitty Block, CEO of Humane World for Animals.

Populus employees in Los Angeles participated in a Humane World for Animals Pet for Life campaign event. Watch this YouTube video to see some highlights.
